How Tray Sealers are Leading the Way in Sustainability

How Tray Sealers are Leading the Way in Sustainability 600 535 The Platinum Packaging Group

Top Sealing trays with a Tray Sealer stand out as an eco-friendly option in the world of packaging. The sustainability benefits of using lidding films on a tray sealer make them ideal for companies seeking innovative ways to reduce their carbon footprint and contribute to a sustainable future. Tray sealers are machines designed to seal wide-ranging perishables in a tray, including fresh produce, meats, ready-to-eat meals, and snacks. While the sealing process extends a product’s shelf life, preserves freshness and prevents contamination, it can also help reduce carbon emissions.

Here are a few ways that tray sealers contribute to sustainability in packaging:

Reduced Material Usage

One of the greatest advantages of tray sealing technology is its ability to reduce the amount of packaging material required. Unlike traditional packaging methods such as overwrapping, tray sealers efficiently seal products within lightweight trays, optimizing material usage and reducing waste.

Extended Shelf Life

Tray sealers create a hermetic seal that extends the shelf life of perishable goods. This reduces the likelihood of food spoilage and minimizes the need for additional packaging, this results in less food waste.  We also offer Modified Atmospheric Tray Sealing Machinery where we pull a vacuum and flush with C02 to extend shelf life.

Material Versatility

Tray sealers offer flexibility in packaging materials. While conventional trays are typically made from plastic or aluminum, The Platinum Packaging Group uses compostable or biodegradable materials, such as PLA (polylactic acid), which further enhances the eco-friendliness of tray-sealed packages.

Tray sealing machine

Energy Efficiency

Modern tray sealing machines are designed to be energy-efficient, utilizing advanced technology to reduce power consumption during the sealing process. This lowers operational costs while reducing carbon emissions, making tray sealers a sustainable choice for packaging applications.

Recyclability and Compostability

Many materials used in tray sealing are recyclable or compostable, offering end-of-life solutions that align with circular economy principles. Consumers can easily recycle plastic trays or compost biodegradable ones, reducing landfill waste and promoting a closed-loop system for packaging materials.

Space efficiency in tray sealer packages

Space Optimization

Tray-sealed packages are stackable and take up less space, making them more efficient to transport and store. This reduces packaging materials, lowers transportation costs, and minimizes carbon emissions associated with logistics.

Tray sealers are a game-changing packaging solution for sustainability efforts. By minimizing materials used, extending shelf life, and promoting recyclability, tray sealers help reduce the environmental impact of packaging. Tray sealing technology represents a step towards a greener, more eco-conscious future.

Platinum Project Angel Food

Providing a Solution for Project Angel Food

Providing a Solution for Project Angel Food 600 450 The Platinum Packaging Group

In October 2021, the management team from Project Angel Food, a local non-profit organization located in Hollywood, California, contacted The Platinum Packaging Group (PPG) to solve a problem with their important goal of delivering prepackaged healthy meals to people impacted by serious illness.

Since 1989, Project Angel Food has prepared and delivered more than 14 million meals throughout the 4,084 square miles of Los Angeles County. This amazing organization delivers more than one million meals every year.

PPG worked diligently to find a practical solution that would keep Project Angel Food on track with the mission of its Medically Tailored Meal delivery program. This program feeds 2,300+ people per day, delivering one week’s worth of meals to every patient, from a menu of 12 different, medically tailored options.

Platinum Project Angel Food Open Cases

THE PROBLEM

Project Angel Food formerly used polystyrene foam coolers for delivering individual pre-packaged frozen, medically tailored meals to clients. These coolers are bulky, fragile and impractical, making it challenging at times to reach their goal of providing meals to those in need.

Insulated Foam for Platinum Packaging Project Angel Food

THE SOLUTION

PPG provided custom made PlatPort Insulated Bags. These bags are double-lined, collapsible and stackable, and feature velcro closure for all four corners, outside/left side ID plastic pocket, D-rings and shoulder straps.

FEATURES AND BENEFITS

  • PlatPort Insulated Bags fold flat for easy storage when not in use. This creates more shelf space when storing meals overnight
  • Designed to hold 14 meals rather than the 7 meals the former coolers held.
  • Improved cold retention within the insulated bag, eliminating the need for ice blocks
  • Color coding on the outside of the bag for easy identification of specialty dietary requirements
  • Increased durability
  • More carriable due to shoulder straps and end handles

This is another example of PPG providing critical packaging solutions to meet the needs of important organizations in the USA.

The Platinum Packaging Group Meets Challenges & Helps Resolve Employee Health Issues

The Platinum Packaging Group Meets Challenges & Helps Resolve Employee Health Issues 954 535 The Platinum Packaging Group

The Platinum Packaging Group (PPG) was contacted 16 months ago by The Dennis Design Group out of Boston, Massachusetts with a complex challenge regarding packaging containers that they needed to resolve:

An Ohio-based produce packer needed to develop automated packaging for their containers to match rising demand for prepackaged fruits and veggies supplied to several Eastern and Mid-West based supermarkets.

PRODUCTS TO PACK

Over 30 varieties of fruits and vegetables, including, but not limited to:

  • Cut, sliced or diced onions
  • Reishi mushrooms
  • Tomatoes
  • Cucumber
  • Green peppers
  • Cantaloupe
  • Cherries
  • Berry Blend
  • Red and Green Grapes
  • Olives

The automation needed to automatically weigh scale and portion control the filling of an assortment of cut and diced vegetables and fruit into plastic packaging containers at a speed of 30 packs per minute / Min of 1650 per hour or 13,200 per 8 hour shift. The company had a very labor-intensive process with little or no portion control. Carpal Tunnel Syndrome caused by repetitive motion is a current plague of the work force.

The task at hand was to introduce automation while saving money in labor costs so that the company could reallocate the current labor force to more varied positions within the organization. Their goal is to simultaneously address the current health issues while providing the same quality as manual packaging.

After months of consultancy and the placement of an eventual order 20 weeks ago, we sold the following equipment. Installation took place in late January.

The Solution PPG Provided:

  • 1 x Bulk Infeed
  • 2 (twin lane) x A C-10 Linear Scale System with Vibratory Indexing Infeed Conveyor
  • 2 x Drop Chutes

The Process:

  • Up to 50 lbs of product is placed in a chute and drops on the bulk infeed conveyor.
  • Product is conveyed to a height of 20 feet
  • Two Vibratory infeed conveyors separate and lead the product into drop chutes
  • Product is then dropped into a container

The Results of Automated Packaging:

  • Massive saving in labor costs.
  • Reallocation of current labor force to more productive applications with less health risks.
  • 30% increase in throughput.
  • Overtime reduced

PlatSEAL Eco Line recyclable packaging for institutions and more

Revolutionary PlatSEAL ECO LINE Recyclable Packaging Films

Revolutionary PlatSEAL ECO LINE Recyclable Packaging Films 1094 396 chaton

The Platinum Packaging Group (PPG) introduced our new ECO LINE in 2019. Our new line of PET films addresses a growing demand for recyclable packaging that is comprised of recycled content. The PLATSEAL ECO LINE of films enables us to produce a PET film with a minimum of 35% post-consumer recycled PET in its composition.

This technology is currently available in our ovenable PLATSEAL Overwrap HSPET line. Our long-term plan is to introduce this into the line of PET-coated PLATSEAL GP lidding films as well. This is part of PPG’s long-term, demonstrated commitment to preserve and protect the environment by providing recyclable packaging options. Our PLATSEAL ECO LINE polyester films are a major part of our vision to help end plastic waste and grow recyclable packaging technology.

We chose 35% recycled content to match the current PET recycling rate in North America while also providing a sustainable supply chain. Our eco friendly films reduce our carbon footprint, removes plastic from our landfills, and contributes to a circular economy.

For cold overwrap applications, we now offer PLATWRAP Cold PLA compostable overwrap. This is derived from plants and composts that are transformed into carbon dioxide and water in less than 90 days.

There is a push for a national plastics tax on virgin plastic in the United States Senate. There is a proposal for a 20 cents per lb tax to boost the use of recycled materials and hold the plastics industry more accountable, starting at 10 cents a lb in 2022 and increasing to 20 cents per lb in 2024. This would apply to single use plastics including beverage containers, bags and food service containers.

The new PLATSEAL ECO LINE of films closes the loop for using post-consumer packaging. This offers the ‘perfect choice’ in terms of a sustainable packaging solution in the market.

Platinum Packaging Polypropylene Wrapping Film for 7-11 Fresh Bakery Products

A Solution to Protect Fresh Bakery Products

A Solution to Protect Fresh Bakery Products 1200 1200 The Platinum Packaging Group

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a catalyst for complete transformation of retail food packaging in the United States. From food delivery and handling to lidding and wrapping films, it’s a new frontier for the entire industry.

The changes have been widespread and wide-ranging. No more open, self-service salad bars in supermarket produce sections. No more open containers served to our kids in school cafeterias. No more bakery items served to you straight from the display case at your friendly neighborhood Starbucks.

The Platinum Packaging Group is now working with the wholesale bakery supplier for 7-11 convenience stores in 15 states across the United States.

Fresh bakery products are delivered daily to each 7-11 franchise throughout the country. Due to more stringent safety standards, it is now required that the products arrive prewrapped.

In the warm, moist environment of a bakery, fresh baked goods generate condensation once they are wrapped. The moisture can affect the quality of the product once delivered to a store. This became a problem for 7-11, convenience stores, coffee shops and other establishments that serve fresh bakery products procured from a bakery.

The Platinum Packaging Group team introduced pre-perforated polypropylene wrapping film to provide a solution to this problem. While providing added food safety, this innovative packaging solution allows condensation and moisture to escape from the bag so that the quality of these baked goods is preserved. The pre-perforated polypropylene wrapping film also extends shelf life and provides the consumer with a better tasting product.

The Platinum Packaging Group offers perforation technology for lidding films, overwrap (as outlined above) and many types of vertical and horizontal roll stock. Applications vary from controlling respiration in produce to affecting moisture retention and escape in hot applications. With the correct hole size and frequency, products can actually be crisped when heated or microwaved as well.

The Platinum Packaging Group’s various perforation technologies means we can offer sophisticated solutions for extending shelf life, steam release gas or water vapor transmission rate control. sealable lidding film

The Platinum Packaging Group Offers Flexible Packaging Solutions

The Platinum Packaging Group Offers Flexible Packaging Solutions 1200 1200 The Platinum Packaging Group

PPG recently partnered with a national packaging distributor to offer a large chain retailer wholesaler an immediate solution of ‘top seal lidding’ for an outer carton cardboard bulk box.

This US-based purveyor of produce was having serious issues with the packaging of their high-quality tomatoes. Keeping the package fresh was a major challenge. The vegetables were packaged with shrink film in a cardboard outer bulk case. Instead of protecting the freshness and shelf life of four pounds of perishable tomatoes, this packaging option led to condensation and caused premature aging. The case’s lack of stack-ability also hindered merchandising functionality.

The Platinum Packaging Group had the perfect solution—our proprietary PLATSEAL Lidding.

Heat sealed to a cardboard bulk box was our first commercial offering in the US. Our peelable lidding film is hole punched in-house, resulting in breathable packaging that protects perishables while providing better stack-ability.

Problem Solved!!! Click here to see this solution in effect.

Our unique range of specialty sealable film lidding offers flexible packaging solutions for a wide variety of needs. For either hot or cold applications, we can offer two technologies coated and/or extruded lidding (top seal) films. Substrates can vary from both plastic and paper containers.

Our PLATSEAL laminates provide a more economical approach for refrigerated items such as salad dressing, dips and pre-made foods. PLATSCRIBE, our resealable film, is a groundbreaking product that provides complete reseal-ability for any packaging application. If you need an unparalleled barrier for dairy and cultured product applications, our PLATFOIL Die-Cut Aluminum Foil & PET Plastic Lids provides exceptional protection.

Our solutions protect your products—and your bottom line.
